I thought it had a NIN quality about it plus sometimes the most simple idea can be so effective...

It's kinda like a jesus christ introspective of his own suffering....or for lack of a better eg: Neverending story Atryu looking into the mirror :)

I like your interpretation. A lot of people are happy with just looking at an image and saying "that's pretty" (etc), without any concern of what it might mean.
